Warm feet: what the research actually tells us

HeatStep boots in a calm home setting

A warm layer around your feet can make a quiet evening feel more inviting. The science of temperature and sleep is interesting too, provided a study is read on its own terms.

The finding behind our chart

Ko and Lee's 2018 experiment compared bed socks with no socks in six young men, in random order. During a seven-hour period at 23°C, average sleep-onset time was 8.5 minutes with socks and 16.0 minutes without them, measured using wrist actigraphy. The study was small, used ordinary bed socks and did not test HeatStep.

Mean sleep-onset time in the study
Condition Minutes
No bed socks 16.0
Bed socks 8.5
Context matters.

These numbers describe that experiment. They are not a forecast for you, a HeatStep performance claim or evidence that heated boots should be worn during sleep.

A comfortable evening, on your terms

Build a small pause into the day: make a drink, put your phone aside and choose something you enjoy reading. If you use HeatStep during that time, connect a suitable USB source and start at the lowest setting. The aim is a pleasant feeling, not the highest number.

Stay awake and able to monitor the warmth. Switch off if it feels uncomfortable, and disconnect before bed or when you finish. A power bank and adapter are not included.

Our HeatStep everyday guide covers fit, power and care. Health questions or persistent cold, painful or numb feet need individual advice rather than a product claim.
