A useful oil routine starts with a simple question: are you caring for the hair lengths, or applying a product designed for the scalp? They are different jobs. Flow Comb helps place a suitable liquid formula along parted sections; the formula and its instructions determine how it should be used.
Choose the oil for the job

Coconut: focus on the hair fibre
A 2003 study compared coconut, sunflower and mineral oils on hair. Coconut reduced protein loss in damaged and undamaged fibres when used before or after washing. Its affinity for hair protein helps explain the result. That finding concerns the hair shaft, not proof of regrowth or a test of Flow Comb. Read the study.
For a pre-wash routine, start with a little on the lengths and ends and follow the product label before shampooing. If using an applicator at the roots, select a liquid formulation explicitly intended for scalp use.
Jojoba: a carrier, not a growth promise
Cleveland Clinic lists jojoba and coconut as carrier oils for diluting rosemary. A ready-to-use blend avoids guessing a concentration. First try a small area as its label directs, and stop if it causes burning, redness or itching. See the dermatologist's guidance.
Rosemary: interesting research, realistic expectations
A six-month trial allocated 100 people with pattern hair loss to rosemary lotion or 2% minoxidil. Neither group showed a significant hair-count change at three months; both improved at six months, without a significant difference between groups. Scalp itching increased in both. This single comparison does not establish that all rosemary oils equal a medicine. Read the trial abstract.
Choose a scalp-labelled, pre-diluted product. Do not fill the reservoir with pure rosemary essential oil. Seek professional advice about persistent or sudden hair loss; an applicator cannot diagnose its cause.
Fill. Part. Glide.
- Read the formula's directions. Check suitability, patch-testing, amount and whether it must be rinsed out.
- Fill a small amount. Use a liquid scalp-suitable oil and secure the reservoir plug.
- Part the hair. Work in small sections so the rounded tips can reach the intended area.
- Glide lightly. Avoid scraping or heavy pressure. More oil is not automatically better.
- Follow the leave-on or wash-out time. Use the time on your oil label; there is no single schedule for every formula.
- Empty and clean. Follow the applicator's care instructions, remove residue and dry before storing. Do not share an unclean tool.
Keep the rest of the routine gentle
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing according to oiliness, applying shampoo to the scalp, using conditioner and handling hair gently. Oil is one optional step, not a replacement for cleansing or conditioning. Read the AAD tips.
Avoid broken or irritated skin. Stop a formula if it irritates you. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or treating a scalp condition, check essential-oil suitability with a clinician. Oil is not included with Flow Comb.
